CARS Meetings: July - September 2023
Tue 4-Jul-2023, 7.45-9pm
Danbury Village Hall
"Ofcom Licence & Callsign Changes"
Murray Niman G6JYB
In a change to our planned event, we were lucky to have CARS VP and RSGB expert Murray G6JYB explain what Ofcom are proposing in the biggest revamp of amateur radio licensing and callsign policy in a generation.
The Ofcom consultation "Updating the Amateur Radio Licensing Framework" was launched on Friday June-23. It proposes a major revamp and modernisation of licence conditions, callsigns and the replacement of 1000+ of NoVs (inc Special Events, Gateways etc).
Many things may be welcome, but other aspects, mainly in callsign policy/changes perhaps less so.
The Ofcom consultation document is 100 pages - so it is not tinkering at the edges!
If you missed the talk at CARS, there is an RSGB Overview video of Murray presenting the slides on YouTube, along with two later panel sessions under the RSGB 'Tonight @8' video series - see link below.
Replies to Ofcom using their Word template should be made by the September 4th deadline. Ofcom will then assess them, produce a statement, and then 'vary' licences to the new conditions early in 2024, with some aspects taking longer still pending IT changes.
All amateurs are strongly encouraged by Ofcom and RSGB to look at the document and respond individually before the deadline.
San Restaurant, Chelmsford
"Summer Social Chinese Meal"
August had no meeting at Danbury – Instead, if you had paid the £10 deposit in advance, members gathered in the San Restaurant, 136 Moulsham Street, Chelmsford CM2 0JT - on Tuesday 8th August 2023.
For 7pm early birds, a drink before the meal, was in the nearby Cricketers PH (143 Moulsham Street, CM2 0JT). Then at the San, to keep it simple and varied, we ordered the popular set price 'All You Can Eat' menu item.

Many thanks to Paul G4PVM for a great suggestion, the San for a great meal and Tony G4YTG for his generosity!
Danbury Village Hall
"Essex Table Top Sale"
By CARS Members
The popular Essex Table Top Sale, hosted by CARS, returned to Danbury Village Hall on Tuesday 5th September.
This year was in the small hall, rather than next door. Amongst other goodies, we had a number of club items including tools and multimeters for sale.
The evening had one of the highest turnouts of the year and proved to be a great ‘recycling’ and socialising opportunity with plenty of refreshments on hand to help things along.
